Age of Empires II: DE – The Last Chieftains for Xbox One

The good stuff

The Mapuche campaign stood out to me - it’s set during their resistance against Spanish colonization, and the way they frame the conflict isn’t just “fight the invaders,” but shows how they used terrain, ambush tactics, and morale to survive. Their unique unit, the Molinero, is a bit weird at first - basically a siege engine that shoots fireballs from a mill - but it works in tight forest maps where you can hide and strike fast. I had one game where I wiped out an entire enemy army by luring them into a chokepoint with a fake retreat, then hitting them with Molineros and war dogs. Feels satisfying, not overpowered, just clever. And the Muisca’s gold-based economy is a nice twist - you’re building up wealth while defending your territory, which changes how you manage resources compared to the usual food-and-wood grind.

The not-so-good

It’s not perfect. The campaigns are short - each one takes about 30 minutes to complete, so you’re not getting a full-scale narrative arc like in some other strategy games. And the multiplayer balance? It’s there, but it doesn’t feel like a huge shift. The new tech trees are fun, but they don’t introduce any mechanics that fundamentally change how the game plays. If you’re looking for something that reinvents the wheel, this isn’t it. Also, no online co-op for the campaigns - just solo or AI. That might bug people who want to team up. And if you’re on Xbox Series X|S, make sure you’ve got enough storage - this DLC is chunky, especially with all the new art assets.

Bottom line

If you’re already deep into Age of Empires II: DE, this expansion is a solid add-on. It brings three distinct civilizations with cool flavors, meaningful stories, and a few tactical wrinkles that make multiplayer more varied. It’s not a game-changer, but it’s exactly what fans wanted: more history, more flavor, more reasons to keep playing. Download it if you’re into strategy games and want something different from the usual European focus. It’s worth it - especially if you’ve been waiting for South America to get its due in the series.
