Gutenberg Gallery Blocks Lightbox for WordPress

The good stuff

It just works. No overcomplicated settings. After installing it via the WordPress plugin screen, I went to my gallery block and made sure “Media File” was selected in the link dropdown - that’s the only setup step. Boom, suddenly clicking an image opens it in a lightbox with arrow controls. It’s lightweight, doesn’t slow anything down, and the design is neutral enough to blend with any theme. I tested it on mobile too - swiping between images was smooth, which surprised me since most plugins mess that up. Compared to heavier alternatives like Envira or NextGEN, this feels refreshingly minimal. And it’s free, which is a big win.

The not-so-good

Yeah, it’s not perfect. There’s no option to customize the lightbox appearance - no colors, no animation speed, nothing. If you’re trying to match a specific brand vibe, you’re out of luck. Also, it only works with the native Gutenberg gallery block. If you’re using a custom gallery plugin or a shortcode-based system, forget it. And the lack of download stats or developer info? Weird. Feels like it’s been tossed in the wild without much support. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing if you’re paranoid about stability.

Bottom line

If you’re using Gutenberg and want a no-fuss lightbox for your image galleries, this is a solid choice. It’s free, functional, and doesn’t get in your way. But don’t expect bells and whistles. If you need more control or are using non-Gutenberg galleries, look elsewhere. For the right use case? Definitely worth the two-minute install.
